I have recently had the chance to go and see the WaveGen’s Limpet wave power device on Islay, luckily for me the weather couldn’t have been better for making wave power – a big Atlantic swell, an offshore wind and a nice sunny day! Hearing the turbines spin up on this unmanned coastal wave power generator has given me a renewed vigour for the work we do for AWS Ocean Energy. I am utterly convinced that we can engineer an offshore device that will produce green energy from nothing but the waves.

a short vid showing a freshwater limpet (Gastropoda)…shell length approx. 3 mm. Near the end of the video, a different individual upside down. Yet another “surprise” that showed up in my aquarium.

Vorticella on Freshwater Limpet

From a water sample taken from Lake Cook in Alexandria, Virginia. This is the rear edge of the shell of a freshwater limpet, ~3mm long. When I checked him out under the microscope, he had a gang of vorticella living on his shell. Vorticella seem to install themselves on any hard surface they can find, whether animal, vegetable or mineral. I’ve seen hundreds attached to a cyclops – surely one of the most active animals of its size. I don’t know if the vorticella actually benefits from a relationship with the creatures it inhabits.
